The pedestrian friendly city of Copenhagen, Demark is a shopper’s paradise. With scores of Scandinavian and international brands available, visitors will be spoiled for choice of designer fashions, home goods, jewelry, and more.
Visitors will want to take advantage of their stay in Copenhagen to purchase authentic high quality Scandinavian items. Scandinavia is well known for their streamlined furniture and home goods, warm goose-down comforters, silverwork, traditional Viking jewelry, porcelain, and crystal. These items can be found in shops and department stores located in the city center, as well as in the shopping malls. Many well-known Scandinavian Design stores, including GUBI and Designer Zoo, are located in Copenhagen. The famous porcelain maker, Royal Copenhagen, has a shop located in Strøget. Danish fashion designers, such as Peter Jensen and Elise Gug, have boutiques located in the city center. Be sure to check opening days and hours as many stores are closed on Sunday.
Copenhagen is a walkable city, which makes shopping fun. The main pedestrian shopping area, Strøget, which consists of four streets connecting the east and west sides of the city, is home to international designer boutiques such as Chanel and Prada. The side streets around Strøget offer numerous small independent shops and ateliers, or artist’s studios.
Antiques, vintage goods, second hand clothing, and more can be found in Copenhagen’s many outdoor markets. Most markets are open May through October. Check opening days as most operate on specific days. Copenhagen’s oldest market, Israels Plads, is located near the Nørreport S-Train Station. Find designer clothing at the Frederiksberg City Hall market. Collectibles and antiques can be found at Nørrebro Loppemarket, located along the cemetery wall on Nørrebrogade.
The two main department stores in Copenhagen are Illum and Magasin. Illum, located in Strøget, features 25,000 square feet of international and Scandinavian fashion and home design. Buy home goods and gourmet foods at Magasin, the five floor department store located in the heart of the city.
